 Competition Judge:  Zaffar Kunial

Zaffar Kunial’s debut pamphlet was published by Faber & Faber in 2014 as part of the Faber New Poets series. In the same year he became the Wordsworth Trust Poet-in-Residence. He has twice been a prize-winner in the National Poetry Competition. He left his full-time job as a ‘Creative Writer’ for Hallmark Cards when he won a Northern Writers’ Award in 2013. In 2015 he won the Geoffrey Dearmer Prize. He lives in Hebden Bridge.

           Entry Conditions


  • Entrants must be 18 years or over.
  • Poems must be submitted in English and should be a maximum of 50 lines.
  • Entries must be the original work of the entrant. Translations of the work of other poets will not be accepted.
  • Poems must not have been published or be currently submitted for publication.
  • Each poem must by typed in black on one side of A4 using a clear font such as Times or Arial 12 point. Each additional poem must be typed on a separate page. Only the poem title should be included with each poem. 
  • The author's name must NOT appear on the poems. An Entry Form, covering letter or email should accompany all entries and give the name and contact details of the author. We are unable to return entries.
  • The closing date for entries is midnight on 31st January 2018.
  • Prize winners will be notified by 31st March 2018.
  • Prize winners will be announced on the TIH website in April 2018.
  • The decision of the judge is final and TIH is unable to enter into correspondence with entrants regarding the prize winners.
  • Copyright remains with the authors but winning entries will be published in Issue 68 of TIH. 

All proceeds of the competition are used to fund future issues of TIH.
